Many Christians think that they need to keep confessing their sins and repenting to please God or maintain salvation.
But we will see that all those things were related to the Law and not Jesus Christ.
The Law exposed sins and that is why the Jews preached the confession of sins.
Romans 3 ” through the law we become conscious of our sin.”
Leviticus 5:5 “5 when anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess in what way they have sinned.”
But the believer has become righteous apart from the law and we are now sinless and perfect by the blood of Jesus Christ that took away all our sins.
Romans 3 “21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. “
John 1:29 “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”
Hebrews 10 “we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all….14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are made holy….18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.”
Jesus FORGAVE ALL our sins and will not die again because the believer is sinless and perfect by His blood.
Colossians 2 “13 When you were dead in your sins…God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross.”
The reason the believer does not need to confess sins is because the law that condemned us was taken away on the cross and the believer is righteous and sinless without the law.
Galatians 2 “19 “For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. “
John was telling unbelievers to confess their sins to be forgiven. (those unbelievers claimed to be without sin and did not want Jesus as Savior)
1 John 1 “8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. “
Its because in the same epistle he told believers that they are already forgiven.
1 John 2:12 “I am writing to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.”
The believer is not a sinner because ONLY Christ lives in us. It is not I but Christ in me. Jesus is not a sinner and therefore I am not a sinner, therefore I have no sins to confess. I am the Righteousness of God in Christ !!
What about Repentance? The believer repented once to have faith in Jesus and received eternal life!
Repentance means to turn from unbelief to faith in Jesus as Paul told the pagan idol-worshippers here:
Acts 17 “29 “Therefore since we are God’s offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone—an image made by human design and skill. 30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising him from the dead.””
We know this because when Peter preached to Gentiles and they repented by faith in Jesus!
Acts 11 “, “So then, even to Gentiles God has granted repentance that leads to life.””
Acts 10 “43 All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.” 44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.”
The believer has already repented from death (unbelief) to life (faith).
1 John 5 “13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life…..12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.”
The believer has already repented by faith in Jesus and is now sinless and perfect by the blood of Jesus without the need for constant confession of sins that we don’t even have anymore!
