Heaven and Hell on earth are extreme rewards of the law that don’t exist.

The gospel that we hear today is that if you believe in Jesus Christ, you will enjoy bliss in heaven forever while unbelievers will suffer torture in hell forever.

Initially I used to believe in this message, but the more we read the Bible and just think about it, such an extreme reward for simple belief/unbelief does not make any sense. God would never create such an extreme reward-based system of judgment simply based on a decision of belief or unbelief.

What does the Bible say? First of all, the Bible tells us about God’s utopia on earth and not in heaven.

  • When Adam sinned, he was cast out of the paradise on earth (garden of Eden)
  • When God promised Abraham the land, it was supposed to be on the earth in Israel.
  • God told Israel that they would inherit the land promised to Abraham if they obeyed the ten commandments of the old covenant.

The entire Bible is about the land narrative, about experiencing heaven on earth or hell on earth as the Law says:

Deuteronomy 28 “If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today,…. All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:…You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country…..The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to….. The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity…15 However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you:…You will be cursed in the city and cursed in the country….The Lord will send on you curses, confusion and rebuke in everything you put your hand to, until you are destroyed and come to sudden ruin because of the evil you have done in forsaking him….”

Israel failed to obey the Law and they were taken out of their land to be cursed in foreign lands.

God then made a New Covenant, promising to restore them to the land and bless them under a new shepherd and king to unite the 12 tribes.

Jeremiah 31-32 ““The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah…. 40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me. 41 I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and soul.”

Ezekiel 34 “23 I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he will tend them; he will tend them and be their shepherd. 24 I the Lord will be their God, and my servant David will be prince among them. I the Lord have spoken.”

Jesus came to establish this New Covenant by forgiving all their past sins. He told Israel what they must do to enter the coming Kingdom of God, the new heaven and earth that would come at the Judgment Day.

They had to repent from all sins, believe in Jesus, receive the Holy Spirit and then obey His commands of the law (loving God and people radically), forgiving all their enemies, selling all possessions, forsaking jobs, lands, earthly desires, be perfect as God, carrying the cross and suffering as martyrs to be resurrected in the new heaven and earth.

Matthew 4 “17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.””

Mark 8 “34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it.”

Luke 5 “32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.””

Matthew 5 “Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”

Luke 12 “32 “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.”

Believing in Jesus meant to do all that He commanded. They had to stop sinning and be perfect like Him by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Luke 6 “46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? “

Matthew 7 “21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”

Matthew 28 “19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. “

Jesus promised to return in the 1st Century on the Judgment day to judge the world according to WORKS and resurrect all people, sending all His followers who obeyed His commandments, into the new heaven and earth where they are like God, immortal and happy forever with all blessings. But all the sinners who did evil were thrown into the lake of fire for eternal torment.

Revelation 22 “12 “Look, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to each person according to what they have done. “

Revelation 20 “11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them…The dead were judged according to what they had DONE as recorded in the books…. whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.”

Revelation 21 “Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away…..He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.””

So if we honestly read the Bible, we see two extreme rewards according to works:

  • Eternal heaven on the earth for those who believed and obeyed all of Christ’s commands, repented from all sins, became perfect as Jesus in loving others, carried the cross, died as martyrs, etc.
  • Eternal hell on earth for those who sinned (both unbelievers and believers who sinned).

Jesus said that the Law would remain until the 2nd coming when He would judge the entire world according to the works of the Law.

Matthew 5 “17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. “

Matthew 22 “37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.””

The judgment day was supposed to happen when Jerusalem was destroyed and the Law would be fulfilled.

Luke 21 “20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies, you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city. 22 For this is the time of punishment in fulfillment of all that has been written.”

The world would be judged on whether they loved God and people radically as Jesus had commanded.

John 13 “34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.””

1 John 3 “23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. 24 The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.”

It was not faith alone, but it was faith that fulfilled the law in radical love, that would save them.

The commandments of Christ was a package deal: Believe and obey….not just believe alone!

The faith that promised the eternal reward of heaven on earth, was radical obedience to the commands of Jesus/God.

This is why you have such radical extreme rewards of heaven/hell on earth because they are based on radical works of the law, inspired by radical faith in Jesus.

Romans 2 “God “will repay each person according to what they have done.” To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger….11 For God does not show favoritism….. 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

You see how the modern-day gospel of “simply believe” cannot give any such extreme reward.

The reason Jesus never came back and never established a new heaven and earth is because NOBODY deserves such a reward. The Biblical Church failed in the 1st century during the great tribulation and Jesus did not find any faith in the Church because they did not fulfill the law (did not love radically).

Matthew 24 “10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,”

Luke 18 “However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?””

If Jesus had judged the world, then everyone would have gone to hell and nobody would have entered the new heaven and earth. This is why Jesus will never judge the world.

The Bible came to an end. The entire Bible was written to show mankind that nobody follows Jesus and nobody has stopped sinning and nobody has become perfect. The Bible shows us that God did NOT judge the world and will never judge us.

God is telling us that He does not want to judge anyone!

He will not bring a utopia of a new heaven and earth because nobody deserves it.

He will not send anyone to a hell because He is gracious and kind.

The perfect God will never judge the imperfect world. There is no future day of judgment.

Life on earth is not a test to determine our final destination heaven or hell.

Life is a journey to discover God’s unconditional love in all our imperfections.

God created an imperfect world so that we may learn about His unconditional love through our journey of life.

God loves us all of unconditionally and He proved it by forgiving our sins on the cross of Jesus.

The gospel today is to know and experience His unconditional love by resting in the finished work of Jesus who will never judge the world. God is not our judge. He is our loving Father and He wants us to know His love through Jesus in this life.
