The believer cannot sin anymore.
1 John 3 “9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.”
It is because our sins were forgiven.
The word forgiven means “sins have been taken away”.
1 John 2 “I write to you, little children, Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake”
John 1:29 “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”
We believers are not sinners and we are not in sin anymore because Jesus took away our sins on the cross and rose from the dead making us righteous and sinless sons of God.
Jesus became sin to make us sinless as God.
But the unbeliever is in sin. If he claims to be without sin then he’s a liar and is not saved. The truth (Jesus) is not in him.
He has to confess that he is a sinner and believe that Jesus died for his sins to be saved.
1 John 1 “8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”
1 John 2 “2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.”
The believer has eternal life because we are sinless in Christ.
1 John 5 “11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.”
In this world, we are like Jesus – sinless, righteous.
1 John 4 “because as He is, so are we in this world”
The unbeliever is dead in sins.
When we believe in Jesus, we are forgiven all sin and became sinless.
What about our behavior? Is that sin? No, it’s just weakness/human-nature/frailty/behavior-issues. It is not sin. We cannot sin anymore. If it were possible to sin anymore then we would die like Adam on the day we sin.
Adam sinned first by breaking the command of God “do not eat from the tree”.
One sin resulted in death and condemnation. But Christ’s obedience on the cross made us righteous (sinless) if we believe!
Romans 5 “12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned…17 For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. 19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one Man’s obedience many will be made righteous…..Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.”
The believer is not dead in sin in Adam…..but is sinless and alive in Christ
1 Corinthians 15 “21 For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.”
Sin was fully revealed in the breaking of the Ten Commandments (law). Even breaking one commandment would make them guilty of all of it (James 2:10). Jesus said that perfect sinlessness was required to enter heaven according to the law (Matthew 5:1-48).
But the believer died to the law, and died to sin by the body of Christ to be righteous by faith alone.
Galatians 2 “19 For I through the law died to the law that I might live to God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.”
Romans 6 “6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. 7 For he who has died has been freed from sin. 8 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9 knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. 10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
If we were under law, then even one sin would condemn and kill us.
But Christ ended the law on the cross so that we are not under law, and therefore not in sin. We are sinless by faith in Jesus.
Romans 4:15 “15 because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.”
There is no sin in the believer. We are sinless in Christ. We are under GRACE and not law.
We became perfectly sinless by the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.
Hebrews 10 “9 then He said, “Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. 10 By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.…14 For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are sanctified.”
