Some Christians think that only the “ceremonial law” ended on the cross but that they have to keep the 10 commandments to be saved.
First of the all, the law is not divided into packages of moral and ceremonial. There is only ONE LAW containing the 10 commandments and 603 ordinances (including circumcision). Nothing can be added/removed from it.
Paul told Jews who were trusting in the law that the only way they can be righteous under the law is by OBEYING it.
ROMANS 2 “13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.”
What law is he talking about? BOTH MORAL and CEREMONIAL.
ROMANS 2 ” 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery?….25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law,”
Paul said that NOBODY is OBEYING the LAW…..not even one!
ROMANS 3 “For we have already made the charge that Jews and Gentiles alike are all under the power of sin…..There is no one righteous, not even one…..”
THEREFORE NOBODY can be RIGHTEOUS by the LAW.
ROMANS 3 “19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.”
So how do we be Righteous? It is by FAITH in JESUS APART from the LAW….(has nothing to do with the law).
ROMANS 3 “21 But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,”
When a person BELIEVES in JESUS, they died to the LAW which is the TEN COMMANDMENTS.
ROMANS 7 “4 So, my brothers and sisters, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God….. I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” 8 But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of coveting. For apart from the law, sin was dead. 9 Once I was alive apart from the law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died”
YOU SEE,….the BELIEVER has DIED to the TEN COMMANDMENTS and the 603 ceremonial laws….When JESUS DIED on the CROSS, the ENTIRE LAW was SET ASIDE so that RIGHTEOUSNESS is given to ALL who BELIEVE.
EPHESIANS 2 “15 by SETTING ASIDE in his flesh the LAW with its COMMANDS and REGULATIONS. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. “
ROMANS 10:4 “Christ is the END of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.”
The BELIEVER is NOT UNDER LAW…
GALATIANS 3 “24 So the law was our guardian until Christ came that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that this faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian (LAW).”
ROMANS 6:14 “14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.“
We DIED to the LAW….and LIVE by FAITH in JESUS.
GALATIANS 2 “9 “For through the law I died to the law so that I might live for God. 20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
WE are RIGHTEOUS by FAITH because we do not trust in the Law.
GALATIANS 2 “So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.”
The Grace of God (Christ in us) teaches believers to love others and live godly lives….the law is not our tutor (Titus 2)
The Law began with MOSES and ISRAEL on Mt.Sinai 1500 years before Jesus came….and the LAW ended on the CROSS and DISAPPEARED in AD70 when Israel’s heaven and earth (land and temple) was destroyed.
HEBREWS 8:13 “13 By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soondisappear.”
The Law disappeared in the 1st Century and yet many Christians are still trying to be righteous by the law, not knowing that we ARE RIGHTEOUS by FAITH in JESUS and not our works!
