The New Covenant: Jesus Christ made the believer PERFECT, HOLY and eternally FORGIVEN.

Why did God make a New Covenant?

It was because the Old Covenant could NOT make anyone perfect but found fault with the people’s sins (HEBREWS 7:19, 8:7-8).

The law was a constant reminder of sins! It was a huge burden!! The animal sacrifices could only temporarily cover sins for one year. This is why they repeated it every year (HEBREWS 10:1-4).Then Jesus came to do God’s will !!

HEB 10 “3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. 4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins………9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”

JESUS DIED on the CROSS to set aside the entire Law (ten commandments + sacrifices, etc) so that the believer is made HOLY ONCE for ALL in the NEW Covenant of GRACE.

The Law’s animal sacrifices had to be repeated every year because it could never take away sins….but the DEATH of JESUS took away past, present, future sins!

The believer has been MADE PERFECT by the blood of Jesus because our sins will never be remembered. God remembered all our sins on the cross and will not judge us!

Jesus will not die again because there are no more sins to be forgiven for the believer!

HEBREWS 10 “14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are made holy….. “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.” 18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.”

But some people think that this is only for PAST sins by quoting Romans 3:25.

The word “past sins” does not mean sins you committed in the “past”.

It means sins committed under the old covenant !

HEBREWS 9 “15 For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.”

So what about future sins as a believer? Are they forgiven ? YES because Jesus already died on the cross ONCE for ALL sin !!

So then what about this warning of “deliberate sin” ??

HEBREWS 10 “26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment….”

This is not about bad deeds…but it is about REJECTION of CHRIST by trying to be justified by the law !!!!We should not do bad deeds because we are Holy Saints in Christ.

But bad deeds cannot lose salvation…..just as good deeds cannot attain salvation.

The only thing that saves us is FAITH.

That is why the writer talks about FAITH vs shrinking back (unbelief).

HEBREWS 10 ““But my righteous one will live by faith. And I take no pleasure in the one who shrinks back.” 39 But we do not belong to those who shrink back and are destroyed, but to those who have faith and are saved.

We are RIGHTEOUS by FAITH….but if we do not believe then we will be judged eternally. In Hebrews 11, it says that we please God by FAITH. Therefore the willful sin is to REJECT Christ by unbelief (Trusting in the law).Paul has the same warning..if you trust in the law then Christ is of no use to you !! You have fallen away! That is the willful sin of Hebrews 10.

GALATIANS 5 “Christ will be of no value to you at all….you who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace”But for the believer who trusts in JESUS ALONE and not works, we are PERFECT, RIGHTEOUS, and God will never judge us anymore !!
