In the past, I was a full-preterist because I saw all the time statements in the NT where Jesus and the Apostles promised that the 2nd coming would happen in the 1st Century.

But Jesus also promised a new heaven and earth where there won’t be any sin or death. Most Christians are futurists who believe that Jesus will come in the future and make a new world without sin and death. Preterists think that Jesus did not lie but that the 2nd coming happened in AD70. But it did not happen in AD70.

The world has continued without any major difference since AD70. There were Christians and unbelievers before AD70. The same exists after AD70. There was sin and death before AD70. The same exists after AD70.

Many atheists use the proof of the “failed prophecy” as an excuse to not believe in Jesus. The truth is that God delayed the 2nd coming. But what is the reason? It is rooted in His nature – LOVE.

Matthew 22 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come. 4 “Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’ 5 “But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. 6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. 7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. 8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. 9 So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.”

Jesus had come to His own people – Israel but they ignored and rejected Him – crucifying Him, killing the Apostles, persecuting the Church until God judged them in AD70.

But God was not done. He wants more people in the kingdom. He saw you and me living 2000 years later. He wanted you and me – He loves us all. His great love did not allow the 2nd coming to happen yet because He is patient and not slow. He wants so many people to be saved !!

This is why Peter indicated towards the end of his life, that God was delaying the 2nd coming here:

2nd Peter 3 “3 Above all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. 4 They will say, “Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our ancestors died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.” 5 But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. 6 By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. 7 By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells.”

People may scoff saying that the Bible is not true or that Jesus failed….but the truth is that God’s great love has delayed the 2nd coming because He loves the world. God knows that after the 2nd coming, there is no more salvation and no more 2nd chances for anyone.

This is why He has delayed the 2nd coming until the full number of people are saved.

God’s love is the root of all truth – we find answers to every theological question when we realize His great love and focus on the simplicity of Christ’s death and resurrection.
