Do believers have to fulfill the law?

Believers are not expected to fulfill the law anymore because the Law ended in AD70.

In the past, the world was under Law.

The Jew was circumcised and under the Covenant of Law.

The Gentile was dead in uncircumcision (outside Law). The Gentiles in those times knew the law on their heart because the Jews preached the law in the synagogues in the Gentile nations (Romans 2:15, Acts 15:21). But nobody was righteous by works.

Jesus came to fulfill the law by His death on the cross that made the law obsolete (the veil in the temple tore). He gave the Holy Spirit to both Jew and Gentile by faith. Why was the Spirit given? To fulfill the law.

Ezekiel 36:27 “And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.”

This is why the apostles commanded the believers to love one another like Jesus loved – this is Agape Godly love – it is impossible in human effort. Only the Spirit could empower them and thereby fulfill the requirement of the law.

Galatians 5 “13 You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” …..22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Romans 8:4 “in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

The believers had to walk in the Spirit to fulfill the law because the law still existed in their lifetime – in the LAST DAYS of the LAW. Their faith needed to have works (agape love).

Romans 13 “10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. 11 And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light. “

The believers were judged according to works (did they love others like Jesus? Agape love). This is why Ananias died on the spot and believers died and fell sick when they unworthily ate the Lord’s Supper (this does not happen today).

James 2 “8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing right. 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers….faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.”

The Law remained until heaven and earth (temple) passed away.

Matthew 5:18 “For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.”

The Law was represented by the Temple of Jerusalem:- The Temple’s holy place where God’s presence dwelt. (heaven)- The Jews under law (earth)- The Gentiles outside (sea).

There was separation between God (heaven) and Jew (earth). Separation between Jew (earth) and Gentile (sea).

When Jesus died on the cross, the Law was obsolete but still remained until the destruction of the temple (Hebrews 8:13).

The Law ended when Jerusalem Temple (Old heaven and earth) disappeared in AD70.

The new heaven and earth (Grace) came at that time.

Revelation 21 “Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God….22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. “

In the New Covenant (new heaven and earth) post-AD70- God and Jesus is with man, there is no separation between man and God.- There is no sea (No Jew or Gentile : no separation between people)- There is no Temple (no sacrifice, no law) because Christ is the temple and those who believe in Him are the dwelling place of God.

In this new heaven and earth, the nations are invited to come to Jesus to receive eternal life without the law (no curse).

Revelation 22 “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. 3 No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.”

Before AD70, faith required works (agape love).Today, believers are not called to fulfill the law (agape love) because the law ended in AD70.

Faith without works saves us.

We are saved by grace through faith and not by works. We have GREATER GRACE today.
