Salvation: Is it a Journey OR Finished work of Jesus ?
The 1st Century believers were journeying to the promised land of the New Covenant.
1st Corinthians 10 ” For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. ….11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.”
Paul said that the 1st Century Church were journeying just like their ancestors, the Israelites in the 1st Century for 40 years.
There was 40 years of finalization of the Covenant in both the Old and New Covenant.
1. Blood of covenant – Israel came out of Egypt by the passover blood under the law – Church came out of Law by the blood of Christ when Jesus died and rose again in AD30.
2. Pentecost (50 days later)- Israel received the Ten commandments and 3000 died- Church received Holy Spirit and 3000 saved
3. 40 years journey until receiving the promise of Covenant- Israel was in the wilderness for 40 years before entering promised land of Old Covenant.- Church was transitioning between Law and Grace for 40 years before entering the New Covenant in AD70 when the Law was removed.
The end of the Age spoken of by Paul was the end of the Law.
Hebrews 9 “but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.”
Hebrews 1 “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, 2 has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;”
Christ was born under the Age of the Law to bring an end to the law.
Galatians 4 ” 4 But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5 to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons.”
The Church was receiving the kingdom of the New Covenant in those last days of the law.
Hebrews 12 “22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem……28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29 for our “God is a consuming fire.””
The Old Jerusalem of the Old Covenant was going to be destroyed in AD70 and the law was going to disappear.
The New Covenant was going to be fully revealed.
Hebrews 8:13 ” By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.”
The Law was made obsolete on the cross but it only disappeared at the end of the Age of Israel in AD70.
The Age of the Law ended in AD70.
Today the believer is not journeying in the wilderness between Law and Grace.
The believer is in the finished work of Christ.
Christ fulfilled the law on the cross and removed it in AD70 when the Temple was destroyed.
The believer is not on a journey of progressive sanctification like those in the 1st Century who were journeying from out of the Old Covenant and into the New Covenant.
But today we are fully sanctified and fully righteous the minute we believe in Jesus Christ.
We are fully in the New Covenant by grace through faith without any works.
