Righteousness in the new covenant

Righteousness in the new covenant.

The old covenant could not produce righteousness because the Jew was guilty under the law and the Gentile was dead outside the law. Nobody could be righteous by works.

Romans 3 “19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. 20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.”

The people in the 1st Century lived in the last days of the old covenant.

Hebrews 1:1-2 “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe.”

They were enduring in faith awaiting the manifestation of the new covenant.

Hebrews 10 “9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all…..36 You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised”

What was promised ? The end of the old covenant and the full revelation of the new covenant.

Hebrews 8:13 “By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.”

The New Covenant began when Jesus died on the cross.

The Old Covenant was made obsolete and would soon disappear in the judgment of Israel in AD70.

The old covenant world was going to end. It was the last days of the Law of Israel.

1 Peter 4 “The end of all things is near”

The old covenant ended in the 1st Century. Old things have passed away. All things are new!

Today we receive the gift of salvation freely without works of the law.

Revelation 21 “5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” 6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life.”

The free gift of Righteousness is given simply by believing in Jesus Christ in this New Covenant world.

Romans 5 “17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!”
