Most believers for the last 2000 years were never under the law of Israel.
And yet so many of us mistakenly put ourselves under the Sermon on the Mount (the law) after coming to Christ by faith.
Jesus was born under the law and preached the law to Israel before the cross (Galatians 4:4, Roman 15:8).
The Sermon on the Mount, carrying the cross, Lord’s prayer, forsaking everything were only commanded to the Jews under the law.
It was never preached to Gentiles outside the law. Most Jews tried to be righteous by the Ten commandments and they failed (the rich young ruler, teacher of the law, etc)
Peter and the disciples tried to carry the cross but they failed.
The only Jew who obeyed the law was Jesus Himself (Matthew 5:17, Romans 10:4)
Jesus never commanded those things to the Gentiles.
But He did mention the case of two Gentiles had great faith (Matthew 8:5-13, 15:21-28)
The centurion acknowledged that he was not worthy to have Jesus come to his home. It’s because he knew that Jews did not come to Gentile homes.
This Gentile however believed that Jesus would heal his servant by just saying a word from afar.
The Canaanite acknowledged that she was a “dog” (Gentile) who was outside the law of Israel.
But she believed that Jesus could bless even the “dog”.In both cases, the Gentiles did not try to keep the law or the sermon on the mount.
They acknowledged that they were outside the law but believed that Jesus would justify them!
Romans 4:4-5 “Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness”
Israel tried to keep the works of the law and failed but the ungodly Gentiles who did not do the works of the law received righteousness by faith in Christ alone!
They believed that Jesus will save the “ungodly sinners” who did no works at all.
Those Gentiles did not have any works to offer because they were outside the law !!
We were dead outside God’s covenant but came alive by faith in Jesus.
The one who does not work but believes in Jesus to justify the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness!!
This is the Gentile who is not keeping the law!
Romans 9:30-32 “What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness of faith; but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness.
Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law.”
The Jews tried to be righteous by obeying the 613 commandments of the Law (including the Sermon on the Mount).
The Gentiles were not under the Ten Commandments or the Sermon on the Mount…but believed in Jesus to be righteous apart from any works! It is because faith and the law are on opposite sides !
Galatians 3 “the law is not of faith”
Romans 4:13-15 “For the promise that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. For if those who are of the law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise made of no effect, because the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.”
The Jews were sinners under law but once they believed in Christ, they are no longer under the law.
Galatians 3:24-25 “Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.”
The Gentiles were never under the law but were dead in sin outside the law.
But now we are alive by faith in Christ without the law because the commandments were abolished on the cross.
Ephesians 2:4-6,11-15 “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus……..Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh—who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands—that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation, having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man from the two, thus making peace.”
