Righteousness of the Law (Doing works)
Righteousness of Faith (Believing in Jesus)
Romans 10:5 “Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.”
The righteousness of the law says this:- Do everything and you will live.- Break one commandment and you will die.
Galatians 3 “10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”
This is why Jesus showed the full extent of the law to the Jews before the cross – to make them realize that they cannot be saved by keeping the Law.
– In Matthew 19 the rich man asked what should he do to have eternal life? Jesus told him to keep the ten commandments. But not only that, He told the man to be perfect, sell everything and become like Jesus in carrying the cross. This man realized that he could not love God with all his heart or love the poor, and he went away sad realizing that he was not righteous under the law.
– In Luke 10:25-37, the expert in the law asked the same question about how to receive eternal life? Jesus told him to obey the law by loving God with all his heart, and loving his neighbor. But this man realized that he was not loving all his neighbors.
In both cases, Jesus told them to attain eternal life by keeping the entire law.
– Matthew 19 “Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
– Luke 10 “28 “Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”
In both cases, the people were unable to obey the ten commandments. You will not even find one case where a person was able to obey the law perfectly in the Bible. It’s because it’s impossible to be righteous by the law.Jesus was using the Law to show self-righteous people that they cannot save themselves by works. The only one who perfectly kept the law is Jesus Christ. Christ fulfilled the law perfectly in His life, His death for our sins, and the resurrection. This is why we can only be righteous by faith in Christ.
Romans 10:4 “Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.” ….But the righteousness that is by faith says:..9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.””
Everyone who believes in Jesus is forgiven all sins.Everyone who believes in Jesus without trusting in their works, is made righteous as God Himself.
