The shadows pointed to Christ

This is an excerpt from my new book: The Revelation of God’s love through Jesus Christ (The New Covenant Gospel of Grace and the End Times) (Copyright © 2020 by Mathew Simon

We are told to look at the faith of Abraham, David, Daniel or Job.

Now, they were great men of faith, but they were not Jesus Christ.

They were all journeying in faith till the reality of Christ was revealed.

Our identity is found in Christ in whom we have been made sons of God.

They were all servants of God, but we are Sons of the Father.

Every story in the Bible pointed to Jesus.

John 5:39 “You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; and these are they which testify about me.”

Everything in the Old Testament was a shadow but the true substance is Jesus Christ.

Colossians 2:17 “which are a shadow of the things to come; but the body is Christ’s.”

When Abel made the sacrifice and died at the hands of his brother Cain, it was pointing to Christ’s death at the hands of His countrymen/brethren – the legalistic religious Jews under the Law. When Enoch was caught up to God, it was a sign of Christ lifting up all believers and seating us in heavenly places. When Noah entered the ark with his family, it was a sign of Christ taking all believers into the presence of God.

When Abraham offered his son Isaac, it was a symbol of Christ’s death on the cross.

Genesis 22:12-14 “He said, “Don’t lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and saw that behind him was a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering instead of his son. Abraham called the name of that place “Yahweh Will Provide”. As it is said to this day, “On Yahweh’s mountain, it will be provided.”

Just like Abraham did not withhold his own son from God,

the truth is that God did not withhold His only Son Jesus Christ from the world.

We were supposed to die for our sins but God provided the true sacrifice as the substitute in the symbol of a ram. Abraham said that  “God will provide”.

God truly provided the sacrifice on the Mountain of Calvary when Jesus died on the cross thousands of years later for the salvation of all who believe in Him.

This is one of the most glorious revelations of Jesus Christ in the Old Testament.

When Isaac married Rebekah, it was a shadow of Christ marrying His bride, the Church. When Joseph was betrayed by his brothers, it was about Christ being crucified by His Jewish brethren. When Joseph was the king who saved those same brothers from the famine, it was a picture of Christ saving the believers from eternal death.

When Moses led the Jews out of Egypt across the Red Sea, it was a picture of Christ saving the Church. When Joshua led the Jews into the promised land of Canaan, it was a picture of Yeshua (Jesus) taking us into the promised land of salvation. When David was appointed as king, it was Christ who was the true king of kings! When Solomon brought earthly peace, wealth and wisdom to Israel, it was Christ who is our true spiritual wisdom, shalom and wealth. When God called Israel as His son whom He called out of Egypt in Hosea 11:1, it was fulfilled when Christ returned from Egypt after being hidden there from Herod (Matthew 2:13). The last prophet and greatest man under the Law was John the Baptist, whose only task was to point Israel to the Son of God, Jesus Christ!

King David represented our Lord Jesus Christ beautifully here when he personally paid for the sacrifice that halted the plague on the land of Israel:

2nd Samuel 24:24-25 “The king said to Araunah, “No; but I will most certainly buy it from you for a price. I will not offer burnt offerings to Yahweh my God which cost me nothing.” So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. David built an altar to Yahweh there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So Yahweh was entreated for the land, and the plague was removed from Israel.”

David is a symbol of Christ because our Lord Jesus is known as the “Son of David”. When Jesus died on the cross, He paid the price fully so that we can receive the benefits. He paid the full cost on the cross through His sacrifice in the New Covenant so that we freely receive salvation! It cost Him everything so we can have it freely.

This is why we don’t follow David, Moses, Abraham or Job but we rest in Christ who did all the work for us to make every believer righteous!
