Believers cannot lose salvation!

Can a believer lose his/her salvation?

Let us think about it:

  • If salvation can be lost by our bad deeds, then it must also be maintained/attained by good deeds.
    • But did we receive salvation based on our good works? No.
    • Therefore salvation cannot be lost based by bad deeds.

Let us now find scriptural evidence to see the truth.

Romans 6 “23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

We deserved death for our sins. Therefore Jesus died for our sins to give believers the FREE GIFT of salvation. If Christ already died for our sins then our future sins cannot result in loss of salvation.

We are saved by GRACE through FAITH and not by works! It is the GIFT of GOD.

Ephesians 2 “for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast.”

Titus 3 “But when the kindness of God our Savior and his love toward mankind appeared, not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior”

We received the gift of salvation not based on good deeds, therefore we cannot lose salvation based on our bad works.

God’s GIFT of salvation cannot be taken back!

Romans 11 “29 For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.”

Romans 11 “And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.”

If salvation is by GRACE then it cannot be attained by works!

Therefore our works do not play any role in our salvation.

  • good works cannot attain salvation
  • bad works cannot lose salvation

We are not saved by our human efforts but only by the MERCY of GOD.

Romans 9:16 ESV “16 So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.”

What did God’s MERCY actually accomplish for us believers in Christ?

Ephesians 2 “But God, being rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him, and made us to sit with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come he might show the exceeding riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus;”

God’s MERCY and GRACE raised us from the dead into LIFE with Jesus Christ.

This means that salvation has nothing to do with our actions.

We were SAVED by the death and RESURRECTION of JESUS CHRIST – and not by our efforts. We only believed in what HE DID and received salvation.

We were dead but now God made us ALIVE.

A believer has passed out of death into life and will never be judged again.

John 5 “24 “Most certainly I tell you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life, and doesn’t come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.”

A believer has ETERNAL LIFE – there is no more “death” for the believer.

John 3:16 “16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.”

We have ETERNAL LIFE – it is impossible for us to die anymore!

1 John 5 “

11 The testimony is this, that God gave to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life. He who doesn’t have God’s Son doesn’t have the life.

13 These things I have written to YOU who BELIEVE in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you HAVE ETERNAL LIFE, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.”

Our salvation is NOT TEMPORAL and it CANNOT be LOST.

Our salvation is ETERNAL – it is permanent, as surely as Jesus lives forever, so will we!

Hebrews 7 “24 But he, because he lives forever, has his priesthood unchangeable. 25 Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them.”

What happens if we stumble in sin? Do we lose salvation? NOT AT ALL.

James 3 “For we all stumble in many things. “

Romans 7 “24 What a wretched man I am! Who will deliver me out of the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ, our Lord! So then with the mind, I myself serve God’s law, but with the flesh, sin’s law.”

We are made from dust and God knows our weaknesses. Our flesh is weak and we will stumble many times. This is exactly why Jesus died for our sins.

Jesus was condemned for our sins so that there is no condemnation for believers!

Romans 8 “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit…..For what the law couldn’t do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God did, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh;”

The believer may stumble but we are NOT in the flesh. We are in the SPIRIT because the Holy Spirit lives in us believers!

The unbeliever is in the flesh (under law) but the believer is in the Spirit (under GRACE).

Romans 8 “ Those who are in the flesh can’t please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if it is so that the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if any man doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ, he is not his. 10 If Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the spirit is alive because of righteousness11 But if the Spirit of him who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised up Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God;

Our body is weak & sinful, and dies, but the HOLY SPIRIT will raise us from the dead to take us to heaven! Our bodies are “dead” but we are alive in the Spirit because of CHRIST’s righteousness and not our own works!

The unbeliever has condemnation because he trusts in his flesh (works) and is judged according to his sins.

But for the believer, there is no condemnation because our faith is in CHRIST and not in our flesh.

Our flesh is weak but we TRUST in JESUS CHRIST alone who is our Righteousness.

God will make our bodies perfect like Jesus in heaven! It is GOD who is doing ALL the work! He predestined us,  He justified us, He glorified us – we did nothing – He did everything !! AMEN.

Romans 8 “29 For whom he foreknew, he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 3Whom he predestined, those he also called. Whom he called, those he also justified. Whom he justified, those he also glorified.”

GOD has JUSTIFIED us…therefore nobody can condemn us – not even our own minds! There is no condemnation for us because Jesus Christ intercedes for us in heaven, because He represents us as RIGHTEOUS people because we believe in Him, and not by our works! Christ’s righteousness covers our sins and weakness!

Romans 8 “31 What then shall we say about these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things? 33 Who could bring a charge against God’s chosen ones? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.”

As believers, our sins are already forgiven! If we do sin after being saved, then Christ is our mediator (counselor) – He is our Righteousness, who took away our sins!

1 John 2

12 I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.

“My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.”

Nothing can separate us from salvation! We cannot lose salvation!

Romans 8 “38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

But what about people who stop believing in Jesus?

If a person once claimed to be a believer, but then stops believing in Jesus until the end of his life, then he was never saved in the beginning. His faith was not authentic. John says that such people were never true believers.

1 John 2 “19 They went out from us, but they didn’t belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have continued with us. But they left, that they might be revealed that none of them belong to us.”

For the true believer, even if we doubt and stop believing for a temporary period, God brings us back and when we come to Jesus, He will never cast us away!

John 6 “37 All those whom the Father gives me will come to me.

He who comes to me I will in no way throw out.

44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up in the last day.

I can testify that this has happened in my life many times when I lost faith but God restored me back to faith in Christ.

God IS FAITHFUL and will keep us blameless till the end.

1 Thessalonians 5 “23 May the God of peace himself sanctify you completely. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.24 He who calls you is faithful, who will also do it.”

God began the work of salvation by grace. He will complete it by the same grace!

Philippians 1 “being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

SALVATION is completely the work of GOD through Christ in us – Jesus never fails.

Therefore the believer cannot lose salvation because of God’s enduring LOVE.

Psalm 136 “Give thanks to the Lord of lords; for his loving kindness endures forever:”
