The Gospel and Abraham

Abraham was a sad old man. He had all the wealth and blessings but he had no children of his own. His legacy was going to end with himself. So he shared his inability to God.

Genesis 15 ” After these things Yahweh’s word came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Don’t be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” Abram said, “Lord Yahweh, what will you give me, since I go childless, and he who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” Abram said, “Behold, you have given no children to me: and, behold, one born in my house is my heir.” Behold, Yahweh’s word came to him, saying, “This man will not be your heir, but he who will come out of your own body will be your heir.” Yahweh brought him outside, and said, “Look now toward the sky, and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” He said to Abram, “So your offspring will be.” He believed in Yahweh, who credited it to him for righteousness.”

Abraham was an old dying man who could not even have a single child.

But God promised children as numerous as the stars in heaven, without Abraham doing any works!

Abraham believed in God’s grace and power!

That is when God declared Abraham righteous!!

This is the clear story of the GOSPEL of Jesus Christ.

We are also like Abraham.

We are dead in sin and not able to live forever in heaven like God. We are mere flesh and blood. Sin and death cannot enter heaven because God is perfect, holy and immortal.

1 Corinthians 15 “50 Now I say this, brothers, that flesh and blood can’t inherit God’s Kingdom; neither does the perishable inherit imperishable.”

So we ask God, who can give me eternal life? Who can give me salvation? How can my sins be forgiven? How can I live forever in heaven?

We are just like Abraham who could not have children. There is nothing we can do. No works can save us. Therefore we BELIEVE in GOD’s ANSWER.

Romans 4 ”

What then will we say that Abraham, our forefather, has found according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not toward God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” Now to him who works, the reward is not counted as grace, but as something owed. But to him who doesn’t work, but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness. Even as David also pronounces blessing on the man to whom God counts righteousness apart from works, 7

Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, whose sins are covered.

Blessed is the man whom the Lord will by no means charge with sin.”

who believe in him who raised JESUS, our Lord, from the dead, 25 who was delivered up for our trespasses, and was raised for our justification.

The GOSPEL is this:

  • We are mere mortals who can do nothing to save ourselves.
  • We cannot live forever because we will all die.
  • We cannot be righteous by works because we all sin.
  • Therefore the SON of GOD Jesus Christ came to the world.
  • He never sinned but lived a perfect righteous life.
  • He died for our sins, tasting our death.
  • He rose from the dead to defeat death & sin.
  • Jesus Christ did everything that we could not do.
  • Everyone who BELIEVES in Jesus is SAVED, declared Righteous, forgiven all sins, and has Eternal life with the promise of going to heaven to live forever.
  • Jesus will come again to bring us immortality and reveal us as God’s children having all His glory and honor and perfection!

1 Corinthians 15 “Now I declare to you, brothers, the Good News which I preached to you, which also you received, in which you also stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold firmly the word which I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead. He became the first fruit of those who are asleep. 21 For since death came by man, the resurrection of the dead also came by man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive.

51 Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed. 53 For this perishable body must become imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 But when this perishable body will have become imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then what is written will happen: “Death is swallowed up in victory.”

“Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?”

56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

1 John 3 “See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him. Beloved, now we are children of God. It is not yet revealed what we will be; but we know that when he is revealed, we will be like him; for we will see him just as he is.”

The seed of Abraham is Christ Himself. In Him alone we have salvation (Eternal life) by grace through faith apart from works!

Galatians 3 “16 Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his offspring. He doesn’t say, “To descendants”, as of many, but as of one, “To your offspring”, which is Christ.”

25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. 26 For you are all children of God, through faith in Christ Jesus.”
