During this coronavirus global pandemic, some Christians think that it is God’s judgment because of our sins. They quote this scripture:
2nd Chronicles 7 “13 “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land”
They plead to God to forgive our sins and heal the land – they say that our sins are not forgiven and that God will not stop the plague unless we pray, fast and stop sinning.
But they don’t realize that this was ONLY true under the Old Covenant. Under the Law, they would only blessed if they obeyed all the commandments. However, in the new covenant, we are blessed by faith in Christ and not our works!
5 Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: “The person who does these things will live by them.” 6 But the righteousness that is by faith says: “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the deep?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart,” that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim: 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Under the Old Covenant in the context of that passage where they had to pray and repent to stop the plagues, they had to offer various sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins.
2nd Chronicles 7
“4 Then the king and all the people offered sacrifices before the Lord. 5 And King Solomon offered a sacrifice of twenty-two thousand head of cattle and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep and goats. So the king and all the people dedicated the temple of God. “
In the Old Covenant, these sacrifices could not take away sins permanently and that is why Israel was under constant judgment for 1500 years.
But in the NEW COVENANT, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ took away our sins forever for those who believe! His one sacrifice removed all the curses for the believer! God will never judge the sins of the believer because Christ has made us perfect by His one sacrifice on the cross!
The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins. 4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;
6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings
you were not pleased.
7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—
I have come to do your will, my God.’”
8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 Day after day every priest stands (under the Law) and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest (JESUS CHRIST) had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:
16 “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”
17 Then he adds:“Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”
18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
Dear believer in Christ, you are under the NEW COVENANT. God has forgiven you of past, present and future sins by the death of Christ alone! There are no more sins to be forgiven for the believer and that is why Jesus does not need to die again!
God promised that He will never ever judge the believer! This is why under the New Covenant He will never stop doing good to you!
“40 I will make an everlasting covenant with them: I will never stop doing good to them, and I will inspire them to fear me, so that they will never turn away from me. 41 I will rejoice in doing them good and will assuredly plant them in this land with all my heart and soul.”
The devil came to give sickness and death but Jesus Christ, the Son of God came to bring abundant life, healing and protection! God did not send the coronavirus because He revealed His GRACE in Christ that healed everyone!
Acts 10 “38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and how he went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him.”
John 10 “10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
Jesus came to destroy death and sickness by His own death!
Hebrews 2 ” 14 Since the children have flesh and blood, JESUS too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might break the power of him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.”
For the believer, God never changes His mind, He only sends good and perfect gifts without finding fault! He sends healing and protection from diseases!
“5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you……17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
