Women are treated as second-class citizens in most religions. But this has also trickled into Christianity as well because of the lack of understanding of the transition of covenants in the Bible.
1st Corinthians 11:5,9-10 “every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonors her head …… for man wasn’t created for the woman, but woman for the man. For this cause the woman ought to have authority on her head, because of the angels.”
1st Corinthians 14:34 “let your wives keep silent in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to speak; but let them be in subjection, as the law also says”
Paul clearly distinguished between men and women and did not allow women to preach. He also told women to cover their heads. Was Paul a sexist or was it a cultural restriction? It was neither. He was just following the Old Covenant that was enforced by angels (Galatians 3:19), where angels punished every violation (Hebrews 2:2). Why did the law command such restrictions? It’s because of the original sin of Adam & Eve.
1st Timothy 2 ” 11 A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15 But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.”
Paul said that it was Eve who was deceived first and therefore she had to submit to her husband. All of human society is based on this system of the old covenant where man is considered greater than woman. This was the reason why women were not allowed to preach under the old covenant and they were commanded to cover their heads.
The Jews were still transitioning between Old and New Covenants and angels ministered to them if they obeyed, but disciplined them if they disobeyed (Hebrews 1:14, Act 12:23). Paul preached the Law to the Jews but he did not enforce it to the Gentiles.
1st Corinthians 9:20-21 “To the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might gain Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might gain those who are under the law; to those who are without law, as without law”
Therefore the commandment for women to cover their heads and to be silent in Churches was given only to the Jews because they were still under the Law. The Jews, who were living in the Roman Empire, needed to be reminded of the Law and not follow the Gentile customs. Otherwise, they would come under the judgment.
Acts 21:20-21 “how many thousands there are among the Jews of those who have believed, and they are all zealous for the law. They have been informed about you, that you teach all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children neither to walk after the customs.”
When Peter told the women not to wear jewelry or braid their hair, it was a specific instruction given to the Jews who had already sold all their possessions. They were not given to the Gentile believers, because we know that Peter was the Apostle to the Jews (Galatians 2:9-10).
The good news is that the Judgment Day ended and the Law passed away in 70AD. The old covenant and all it’s rules ended in 70AD. Today we live in the New Covenant, where there is no Jew or Gentile, and there is no Law for us to keep. There is no male or female in Christ. No one is more superior, but we are all one in Christ.
Jesus Christ has fulfilled the law and reversed the curse of Adam and Eve. We are not under the sin of Adam and Eve. No man is under the curse of Adam. No woman is suffering due to Eve’s sin. It’s because we are under Christ’s finished work! Therefore we have freedom in the new covenant where God does not judge us anymore. He has made “All things New”. Today women are equal to men in Christ.
Women do not need to cover their heads or keep quiet because the Law has passed away. Men and women are equal. Both women and men are free to wear jewelry, tattoos and keep any kind of hairstyle. Women can preach in Churches and also pastor them. Today, we also see that some women are greater leaders than men. Some men can be mellow and feminine in nature, but some women can be masculine and aggressive. Some men and women have gay tendencies due to genetic reasons. These are not sins, because we are not under the Law that put women under men’s authority. Today we live in the freedom and liberty of the New Covenant where ALL people are equal in God’s eyes.
Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died on the cross for our sins and was raised from the dead after 3 days. Everyone who believes in Jesus receives the forgiveness of sins, eternal life and the righteousness of God as a free gift.
