The movie Moana (2016) was a very successful animated movie from Disney. After my 4-year old daughter forced me to watch it several times, I’m convinced that this movie beautifully symbolizes the finished work of Jesus Christ – who removed the curse of the law !
My initial thoughts about the movie was how we need to respond to God in faith taking huge actions and risks, but then I realized that this movie is all about what Jesus has done !
The story is briefly described here in my words:
In the beginning, the world is beautiful and there is a goddess TeFiti who is a green mountain in the middle of the sea – TeFiti gives blessings to the world in the form of greenery, fruits, vegetables. There is a stone in the walls of the mountain – that gives life – it is the key that gives life to the world. This is a symbol of the Garden of Eden where God placed Adam to eat from the trees in the garden, and where there is the tree of life.
But there is a little boy called Maui who is abandoned by his parents and thrown into the water. It’s a symbol of Moses (the law). Maui is adopted by the gods and given a hook/staff by which he does miracles. However he gets greedy and goes to TeFiti to steal the stone that gives life. It’s because Maui wants to be like “God” to have the power to give life !! This is symbolic of Adam who wanted to become like “God” and ate from the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
When Maui steals the stone from TeFiti, the curse breaks loose and darkness fills the world – bringing death and destruction. TeFiti who is a goddess of love and creation is transformed into a demon of destruction called “Tekaa” that defeats Maui and banishes him for 1000 years. This is similar to what happens to Adam – who was banished from the garden. It’s also similar to the “devil” who was bound for 1000 years in Revelation 20.
Maui represents Adam – man’s desire to be perfect like God instead of accepting the finished work of God. Man’s sin was that he did not accept that God just loves him the way he was but wanted to be “perfect”.
But then after many years, the ocean chooses a small little girl – with no power or resources. She is Moana – chosen to restore the stone to TeFiti and end the curse ! This is a symbol of Jesus Christ. The little girl Moana leaves her family and by faith crosses the vast ocean to find Maui and take him back to TeFiti. It’s like Jesus who leaves His Father in heaven to come to find Adam (humanity) and save him. They defeat the monsters and the demon Tekaa to finally restore the stone to TeFiti. It’s a symbol of Christ (Moana) and the Adamic race (Maui) working together just like Jesus and the Church together fulfilled the law and destroyed satan(law) in 70AD.
Moana is guided by the spirit of her grandmother during her calling and journey to TeFiti. This is a symbol of the Holy Spirit guiding Jesus and the Church. It’s also a symbol of how God shows His love to us during this life.
But another amazing thing I learnt from this story. When Moana is trying to go back to TeFiti to restore the stone, she cannot see the “goddess”. She only finds the demon Tekaa. This is a powerful symbol of the Bible. They cannot see God’s love until the devil is defeated. God’s love states that He never judges or remembers sin, but they do not see this until Judgment day. Before the judgment day, they only can see God who judges according to works (Rev 22:12, 1 Cor 3, Eph 6:8, 2 Cor 5:10, Matt 25, Matt 16, Romans 2). Their “god” is the law and this law must be fulfilled until the 2nd coming in 70AD. It is only after 70AD that God reveal his true face of “no judgment” when the devil is defeated and law ends ! It’s only after judgment day, He says “I will remember their sins no more” (Heb 10:17) and “old things have passed away, ALL things are new”. That is when the god of law ends and DADDY God is revealed !! The same Daddy that Adam knew before the fall !
So in the same way, the “good god” is not revealed until Moana defeats Tekaa….and she sees that the Tekaa is none other than the goddess TeFiti ….who only needs the stone restored to become the good goddess again !!
This is so powerful….when Adam sinned, he made Daddy God into the Judge of the law !
The law was the devil !! That condemned man and brought curses !
But when Jesus obeyed and fulfilled the law with the Church – and finished the work in 70AD – that’s when the law ended and the curse ended. Daddy’s love was revealed after judgment day!
Tekaa was a burning mountain that brings destruction – this represents the law of Moses – and the burning mountain of Sinai (Hebrews 12:18). The law brings a curse in the Bible, and in the movie – when the stone was removed from TeFiti – it became Tekaa that brought a curse. But when the stone was restored, the burning mountain was transformed into TeFiti – the Old Covenant was replaced by the New Covenant when Jesus finished the work !
After Moana restores the stone to TeFiti and the goddess fall asleep in REST – the curse ends ….the devil/demon Tekaa ends – there is no more curse – but only blessings – the plants are green, fruits are abundant -abundant life is here ! Paradise has been restored. The leaves of the tree heals the nations (Revelation 22:1-4) Mankind has been restored by Jesus Christ back to the garden where he is with God and can enjoy the blessings again.
Even today, there is no more curse in this life – Christ has finished the work – the judgment is over – ALL are born righteous – it’s finished. God is at REST…..there is nothing for you to do because He finished the work !!
Revelation 21: “IT IS DONE”
Do not resist it friends – you are not called to attain blessings/righteousness by your efforts – just REST and RELAX – the work is finished – the curse is over. Believe in Jesus and you have every blessing freely.
The story of Moana is powerful – and it powerfully and beautifully shows the finished work of Christ who removed the curse. Please do watch the movie !
Jesus Christ is the Son of God who died on the cross for our sins and was raised from the dead after 3 days. Everyone who believes in Jesus receives the forgiveness of sins, eternal life and the righteousness of God as a free gift.
